Myths and lore about boars?

I've just had a vivid dream featuring a wild boar which could be eaten and grew back. (I know it sounds pretty weird.)

So I'm looking for myths and lore about boars. I've found some Greek stuff at theoi.com so far:

If I remember correctly; both the Dagda and Manannan Mac Lir have pigs who can be killed and eaten, and yet regenerate whole.

Freyja and Freyr are connected with boars as well. Freyja transforms her lover into a boar in one poem, and the dwarves create Gullinbursti for Freyr. But IIRC they're not killed and brought back to life, but the theme exists in Norse mythology, just not with boars in particular.

Not thinking of boars, but of being eaten and growing back leads me straight to Thor and his goats


Alternatively, for boars generally you have both Freyr and Freyja's boars, so there are a number of things that make me think of Norse myths when I think of the dream you had.

Saehrimnir is a boar that is eaten nightly in Valhalla.

"But there are never so many people present in Valhall that there is not enough meat on the boar Saehrimnir to feed them. Saehrimnir is cooked every day and in the evening he is whole again (...). The cook is called Andhrimnir, but the cauldron Eldhrimnir.' [Gylfaginning 37]


Though this is from Snorri, and he tries to create a type of paradise, boiling meat in a specific way in a specific cauldron was a type of sacrifical rite for the germanic people. Which might also be the origin of seidhr/seethe/boiling...the fat rendered at the top was particularly important/useful. Saehrimnir itself has some connection to 'seyðir'- cooking ditch.

I can confirm Manannan's regenerating pigs. I'm pretty sure that there are 2 that are his. If you want UPG on pigs, I got some doozies about sows, but very little of that is supported by actual lore.

Mmm, this was what first came to mind for me too!

Waldhexe, forgive me if I'm mistaken, but didn't you say back on the old SMF forum something about being curious about Manannan? I don't know, but maybe there's a possible connection? Just an idea. :)

Manannan rings a bell. I had a strong connection to the ocean while I lived on coast, but I haven't found the time to research him properly. Maybe it's a little poke.

Manannan is a little difficult for me to grasp. I get the sea connection, I've also had a couple of dreams about dolphins and seals over the years, but the boar feels like it is a different 'aspect'. I feel it might be connected by a common 'theme', but I can't easily put it into words. It's like the dolphins and the boar both represent some kind of fertility and sprightliness.

I had also the incling of humor in this dream, but can't quite put my finger on it. No idea, what's supposed to be funny about it. I felt like someone was casually presenting a joke to look if I get it. I think I haven't got it quite yet... :confused:

I've also considered a connection to Freya, because I've had an encounter with her earlier this year, but if it is connected to a deity it feels more like Manannan than Freya. I wouldn't put it completly past Freya though.

They've been reintroduced in places - mainly as escapees from farm enclosures. TBH I think we're a bit densely populated for it to be a good idea for there to be significant numbers in the wild. There may be the occasional place we can get away with it, but they're not known for being friendly.

Boars show up a LOT in Celtic lore.  Try searching in Sacred Texts and see what pops up.  

There is also a connection between Brighid and boars.  IIRC, one of Her "pets" is the King of the Boars.  I can't find the reference right now, unfortunately, but I'll look when I'm feeling a little better.

Uncertain about particular folklore regarding boar and swine in general.  I once thought the mow hawks worn by the Spartan soldiers were a euphemism regarding the tenacity and power of razor back boars, something you do not want to muck with.

I recently learned pork and apples are foods reserved for the Gods albeit I am selfish along with my share of mead.  Ironic most pigs are cooked with an apple cork in their mouth, eh?

I know pork is revered by the Jews as a tainted meat or it may be split hoofed creatures in general as filthy to eat.  I know that eating meat on Friday is generally a no-go prior to the Sabbath day.

TL;DR
Pork, Apple - Food of the Gods.  Uncertain if Mead is supposed to be reserved for them also but I selfishly partake in it also.  Barbequing ribs for dinner is my favorite pass time.

Darn, beat me to that comment.

As far as I can tell, boars were incredibly important to the Celts, and pig or boar meat was one of the 'prestigious' meats.  It was a proper banquet if you were being fed boar.
Thefore, boars pop up all over the place in myths - Diarmuid springs to mind, too - he was forbidden from killing boars because his - brother?  My memory fails me - was turned into a boar, in one version of the story.
Hunting boar was also a big thing.

Sorry, none of that is very specific.  Definitely follow the link Aster suggested, and other people will be far more able to tell you about sacred/mythic boars.
