Signs of Spring
« on: March 29, 2014, 06:25:30 pm »
(Wasn't sure where to put this, I guess here fits well enough...)

The red-winged blackbirds are back in town! :D:

What signs of spring are springing up in your area? Or autumn, for all the down-under folks?

The live oak leaves are falling. For those not in Texas, this is a sign of spring (not autumn).

Pot holes.

(I wish I was kidding.)

Okay, but seriously: normally it's when the temperature gets above -15C. It's really noticeable. The next sign is being able to see the concrete on the road. After that it's when you can see all the sand on the edges of the road and the little medians, and the grey-green grass that has only just started peaking through about 12 metre high snow piles. After that, it kind of snowballs (heh) rather quickly as all the snow begins melting (it also smells awful depending on where you are in the city, and if drainage is plugged up due to still being frozen, and just the smell of wet sand on the ground), although it will still be several weeks, if not a month, before you start seeing real spring growth.

Unfortunately spring in Winnipeg isn't very pretty.

The forsythia is blooming, as are the daffodils.  A more certain sign - the spring allergies have hit with a vengeance and the neighborhood pharmacy has run out of Claritin.

Flowers everywhere! I love it! And green sprouts on the trees. Warmer air and...uh...some birds decided to make a nest in one of my porch lights which is a problem because I'm moving out! :ashamed: I hope they stay safe.

Last weekend,  I saw a fair amount of blue jays while walking out to the bank and today I noticed that there were a pair of birds (probably the same Carolina Wrens from last year) now living in the birdhouse in our back yard. Both make me very happy to see.

It was really warm and sunny today.  I was working in the garden,  where the trees are in blossom and the roses are starting to get new growth.

Forsythia, salmonberry, flowering currant, and osoberry are blooming (dandelions just getting started).  ALL the young hens are laying, and one keeps threatening to go broody and raise a family.  The hummingbirds and bushtits are getting frisky, building nests and/or sparring.  The black-capped chickadees are singing their spring seduction of "HEY-BABY! HEY-BABY!"  My back hurts from digging and moving compost, and my toenails have dirt under them all the time.

Word.

Of course right after I start this thread, it snows 15 cm overnight ... and yet it's been 10C all day today. Seriously, WTF?

The crocuses in the yard are blooming and the coltsfoot are blooming in the grassy verges and rocky places. I've spotted a new flower that has shown up around here and I've just found it in a book...Yellow Star-of-Bethlehem. A neighbor's lawn is now dotted with purple Glory-of-the-Snow (I love that name!).

I've spotted the two main avian heralds of spring, the Eurasian Blackbird and the Fieldfare. And I saw a pair of swans while out on a drive in the country.

Here, too. Only the storm sewers are still iced over, so today there's a spot on my street where the water is up to the bumpers on cars. I saw one SUV throw up a rooster-tail that completely drenched 2 other cars, that was just rude.
