I'm in a bit of a rut, and also extremely low on energy these days. (I eat well, but I feel...unnaturally tired. I do not have anemia, or any discernible nutrient deficiency). I just find...that I need to sleep a lot lately, and this came about very abruptly. I also am getting a lot of headaches.

When you feel generally under the weather - what do you do to regain energy? Any/all suggestions very much appreciated (not just spell work wise, but in terms of herbology, or meditative practices, or whatever you want to send my way as a recommendation).

First, if I'm actually sick, I take care of myself and get better. If it's just "I'm feeling blah", I generally try to do things I really like to break the "blah" cycle.

I like to do something active, like running or lifting or go take the dog for a walk. I have found that even though I feel drained and I have to force myself to do these things, about 5 min into the the exercise my blood starts pumping and I start feeling like myself again. Got to get that blood flowing and open up those lungs and you will feel right as rain!

There are many, many medical things that can cause these symptoms. The most important thing to do in these situations is *always* to get medical investigations. I have a condition that took 28 years to diagnose fully, with various related conditions, which in its 'quieter' periods can cause symptoms like those you describe, and at first was easy to mistake for just being run down. In my case, I did lots of exercise to increase my energy levels, and my joints couldn't handle it and I got worse. This is why really good, specialist medical investigations can be needed when these symptoms come on suddenly, or are enduring.

After that, I would personally seek advice from a doctor, or at least a registered, experienced herbalist, naturopath etc, about what treatments or self-help are needed.

Just my two pennies, of course.

First I visit my doctor to rule out possible health issues. I've had severe anemia in the past and currently have other issues, so any change in my health sets off warning bells so I try to get checked out ASAP.

If my doctor rules out a health issue, I use meditation and physical activity to regain energy. When the weather and time permits, I go outside and meditate while the sun is rising in the morning. I also take long walks in the evenings after dinner. Oh, and abdominal aka diaphragmatic breathing exercises are helpful. You could do the breathing exercises prior to getting out of bed in the morning. The internet is full of info on different techniques on diaphragmatic breathing, if you don't have experience doing it.

Hope you get to feeling better soon :)

Ta, guys! I do have celiacs and a history of ulcers (the celiacs took a long time to discover, sadly). I am switching my coffee for mate, trying to set a bedtime etc. I do admit - I don't like going to the doctors, but will see one if this tiredness lingers on for too much longer...

If you haven't had thyroid function tested recently, that would be a good one to check (autoimmune diseases often run together, and there's a crossover between celiac and thyroid issues.) Also vitamin D, B vitamins, and ferratin.

In terms of practices - my most longstanding two are painting my toenails as a devotional act (they're always some shade of blue) and using playlists for specific purposes - the first gets updated when I have the energy, the second takes time to set up (and edit periodically) but other than that is pretty low-demand.

I mostly take "I AM VERY TIRED NOW" as a sign I should listen to my body and a) sort out what I need to do about that and b) in the meantime, get plenty of rest (which is partly about sleep, but also about pacing myself.)

Part of what I learned when I was dealing with major medical foo and exhaustion (which in my case got much better after treating the thyroid and the vitamin D issues) was that lying down horizontally helped a lot. (I got the idea from some chronic fatigue resources: simply sitting isn't as restful for your body as lying down.)

Being horizontal and reading (or listening to music) but something undemanding for 20 minutes does a huge amount for me sometimes.

Had your thyroid checked lately?  The topic was much discussed fairly recently here and here and here.

I like to go for a walk in the woods, at the halfway point sit and ground and meditate, concentrate on whatever is causing it being pulled into the ground by Grandmother Earth (to be recycled into something positive, or bound so it will not effect anyone else) Energetic, uplifting music helps me as well. The vibration of music is a great and under used tool.

Going to echo some others here...
  • Go outside! Sunshine and fresh air does a lot to improve my mood. Especially considering I work in an office environment, and while I sit near a skylight, I don't see outside at all most work days.
  • Get exercise. Gets endorphins going and sweating feels like a bit of a purification. If I'm really under the weather, though, I don't do anything I know will take a lot of exertion so I don't overdo it.

Combining both these things, going to the barn to ride is my weekly therapy session. :)

I'm going to have to agree with pretty much everyone else here!
1-Get looked at by a doctor.  I was feeling down and it turns out I had a pretty severe vitamin D deficiency.
2-Get outside. Even if you start with a walk around the block, and a slow one at that, soak up the sun and the fresh air.
((Katia))  Feel better!

As well as the recommended doctor's visit (if it lasts to long), I work my hardest to do something new to break out of the rut I'm in.

Of course, the rut is almost always the source of my trouble. Maybe you could try to figure out the source of yours and try to tackle it in a way it might not see coming?

After ruling out medical issues (sorry to sound like an echo) I normally put on music that reminds me of my path which puts me in the mind set to get working again. If I'm to tired to actually get up and do something then I sit and read or do some planning, even clean some of my tools or recharge my crystals. I find Air Moves Us by Reclaiming gets me in the mood to do some work.

I hope you feel less tired soon and will send some healing energy your way.
