Sensing/Recognizing Energy
« on: April 24, 2013, 11:28:10 pm »
A lot of what I'm learning about seems to first start with energy and then centering/ground/shielding/etc. It makes sense to me. I am going to throw out a definition here and hope I'm using it right, but I get animism and that everything has an energy or gives off an essence. But my hold up is...I can't feel it. I'm of the belief that we all have the ability to sense energy but it isn't nurtured growing up so you don't realize that energy is around you, like when you hear a buzzing noise and eventually your body just tunes it out and you don't hear it but it's still there.

I have been reading and re-reading on Jenett's website the portion about energy and how different people sense it with different senses. And I have tried the activity of rubbing my palms together and feel the resistance. But all I feel is warm palms from friction.

So here is where you lovely people come in!

Did you learn to sense energy or did you always have the ability? How do you sense it (sight, sound, touch, etc)? What types of exercises would you recommend? Can I have walls up and not realize it?

I think that meditation would play a role in this as well, just focusing on your breath and your self will allow some of those hidden skills to emerge and become less hidden. Has this been the case for you?

I feel like energy is an important factor and I'd like to practice it while I continue to learn.

I mostly *hear* energy, but it's something that took me a long time to be able to talk about, and something that still doesn't go into English very well. (Or rather, I can put it into English with people who have a fairly large and specialised musical vocabulary - my descriptions are usually a combination of instrumentation, tonality, and comparisons to various genres or pieces of music (hi, yes, I was a music major in college among other things.))

I do also feel it, if I'm in the right setting: once I learned how to play with the energy resistance in the exercise you described, I had a much easier time feeling it elsewhere. But it took some practice with people (my teachers) who were skilled at producing focused energy on demand, for some approaches.

I should also note that learning how to sense energy is a lot easier with someone else to work with (ideally, someone who's got some sense in whether they're focusing energy or not). Doing it on your own, you hit the question of "are you not producing much, or not sensing much?" and the troubleshooting for the two is different.

Anyway, as that article notes, there are bunches of different ways to sense energy, and most people have one or two that work, and a couple that really don't work. (I get no visuals at *all*, for example)

The other way you can explore this is to put yourself in situations where focused energy is in play. This can be a ritual, but depending on the setting, other kinds of religious service may do it. Some kinds of music concerts do it, or theatre. Some yoga practices do. Some martial arts do. For a lot of people I've worked with, once you figure it out in one setting, a bunch of others will follow very quickly.

The other biggest thing I can say is that society trains us *out* of sensing energy in a lot of ways. Regular repeated work (even if it feels at the moment like you're not making headway) can be very helpful over time. Doing quick things that help reinforce that you're getting useful data can help.

When I was doing initial energy training, I was doing a lot of library book shelving and inventory. One of the things I used to do is hold the book, guess its age, and then check it. I started out by being maybe in a 15-20 year range, and by the time I stopped doing the exercise, was within a year (i.e. if the book was published in, say, 85, I'd say 84, 85, or 86) at least 75% of the time.

Now *some* of that is clearly cues from the layout/font/binding/design/etc. (A book designed in the 80s is... well, the 80s are sort of unmistakeable in a lot of ways.) But to get it down to a year on either side, something else was going on.

The other advice my teachers always gave was 'act as if'. Do energy exercises (like grounding, centering, etc.) as if they're working, even if you don't feel them. For some people, that'll open up the channels so they actually do start working. (It may take some time.)

I can taste energy and I can feel it in my stomach (for some reason energy is like food for me don't worry I don't get it either) I can see it only when I really, really focus, and I can only feel some kinds of energy. Here's the thing I have always been able to do this I just didn't know I could. I would have stomach aches when I stood in some places in my house but not others. When I looked at the forest across from our house I would begin to get a stomach ache for no good reason. It wasn't until latter that I recognized what it was.

Before you can learn how to sense energy you need to know what you feel in your day to day life. Pay attention to how you feel as often as possible and that might help you distinguish when you can sense things. You might find that you can already sense things you just didn't know what that particular feeling was.

Here is my disclaimer; in my experience if you are taking any mind altering drugs prescription or otherwise it will be much harder for you to sense energy so that could be a factor as well. I'm not saying you should stop taking these but it's something to keep in mind.

After all of this all you can do is try using energy and then trying to feel it. Use all of your senses and pay attention to what you feel. I hope that helped and that it's not discouraging as with all things this is easier for some people then it is for others. Good luck.

FIRST OF ALL im really diggin yur avatar ermagerd

but also for me i feel and see energy mostly. well i can see auras... i kinda figure it might be connected somehow. but i tried that rubbing together of palms thing once and i didnt feel anythin besides warmth and tingles from friction. so meh.
for me energy feels kinda like a shiver or that feeling ya get when you stretch or sneeze. its not really that tingly. i used to always shiver/jolt cuz i sorta automatically absorbed energy around me but couldnt hold it. then i figured out how to control it better and thats how i learned how to do stuff with energy!
to feel it i think a lot of it hasta do with breath and relaxing and stuff. kinda like i walk around with my pipes clogged so to feel/move the energy i hafta unclog my pipes by relaxing. and then if i focus on a person or area i can feel its energy. i dont know any tricks to learning how to feel it if you cant already tho. maybe meditate. but i hate meditatin and usually get really annoyed when people give that as a answer... good luck!

SIDE QUESTION: do people smell or taste energy? is that a thing?

I had to work at it, and the exercises that worked for me were in C Penczak's Inner Temple of Witchcraft.  In particular the partner exercises really help one sense a person's energetic 'layers.'

I agree with this.  Another book that helped is The Psychic Energy Codex by Michelle Belanger.  It's full of practical exercises to develop energy sensing/manipulating abilities.

Thank you. I will definitely find a place or event that would provide such energy and see what I can feel.

Thanks for the book ideas. I want to fully understand how it works before I really dive into so books are great. Thank you!

Sorry about that I didn't see your post either. Well energy tastes like different things depending on the type of energy but it is hard to distinguish sometimes. A lot of time it tastes like dry static, and many times it can taste like spring water. Sometimes the taste just can't really be put into words no matter how hard I try. The energy given off by my computer right now tastes like a dry towel. Of course all this really means was that I had no right posting here in the first place cus' my way of sensing things is so far off from everyone else's that my success rate for teaching it is zero. Anyways hope that helped.

Well it's not all good I do get stomach aches when the energy in the area get's bad. I'm also not wholly unsure if I'm some type of energy vampire or not. But I guess it is always nice to be in reach of a light snack. One of my friends wants me to fast and see how well my body survives on just energy; I'd rather not.
