Vegetarian, Vegan etc
Are you a veggie? Anyone in your family a veggie? Are there any problems at meal times if not everyone in your family are veggie?
Both me and my other half are meat eaters but my mums a veggie so when she comes to stay my other half gets all huffy because of the lack of meat (it doesnt bother me, I'm happy without meat for a week or so when she's here) but I always have a bit of a panic when she comes - what on earth do I feed her?? Thankfully I have a load of veggie recipes already in my recipe book but it does make me feel a bit out of sorts lol!

Re: Vegetarian, Vegan etc
My boyfriend & I are vegan so there's no trouble there. I've even converted my dad to veganism so when my family gets together for dinner there's just as many vegans as there are omnivores.
I've found the best solution is to bring over something vegan that *everyone* will enjoy instead of forcing my mother to cook something vegan. It's a great way to show people that our food can be just as tasty as theirs!

Re: Vegetarian, Vegan etc
I went through a phase of being vegetarian, and then vegan. It was an attempt to try and narrow down my diet- to see what was causing health issues. Suddenly, my parents thought I was unhealthy, that I looked sickly. That I was making it worse because I was no longer eating meat.
Really stupid stuff.
It created issues for me when I went out to eat. I found it hard to try and find something that was safe for me to eat. I felt like I couldn't really enjoy eating out. Since then, I've moved more into a paleo-styled diet. Even that can be a challenge to eat with- but not nearly as difficult as when I was vege/vegan.

Re: Vegetarian, Vegan etc
I was vegetarian for two years in high school during a hippie dippie phase. I like vegetarian food, and I strongly believe in environmental benefits of vegetarianism and the ethical treatment of animals, but I craved red meat so strongly during that time that I decided that eating meat every once in a while is okay.
I also tried veganism this year for about two months, mostly because I have newly vegan friends and I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I think my friends saw Avatar and decided to become environmentalists. You know how the gays are, they're into whatever's trendy
. Anyway, I read a lot of books and tried to eat a balanced diet, but I was still tired and hungry all the time, so I figured it wasn't worth it.

I'm attempting to go pescetarian, which is vegetarian + dairy/eggs + seafood. I say attempting because I still live with my parents and my mother just... doesn't get it. I've told her repeatedly that I'm not eating red meat or chicken anymore, and then a week later she lets me know we're having steak for dinner. *headdesks* So I'm trying to learn to cook and buy my own groceries and such so I can better control what I'm eating.

Re: Vegetarian, Vegan etc
I don't think it is mean to ask.

I became pescetarian sort of by default. I stopped eating red meat and pork when I was working in Environmental Education due to farming practices and was on my way to making a decision about poultry when I got salmonella poisoning. Twice. In a row. From restaurant-cooked chicken. That pretty much helped me decide to weed it out.
I remain pescetarian for a few reasons. First, and foremost, I do it out of habit. Secondly, I know that I would have no qualms procuring my own fish/mollusks/crustaceans from the wild for food...if need be. I cannot say the same for mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds...and there's a part of my mind that tells me I should only eat the foods that I would be able to comfortably catch/kill myself.
I don't judge others for their eating habits; to each one's own.Fluid Morality - my spiritual blog
