Good wishes wanted
« on: November 15, 2012, 05:44:07 am »
Eye appointment: Last month my ophthalmologist spotted a discoloration on my retina - didn't think it was anything serious, but wanted a follow up

Did that yesterday - result - more followup at the UofM Medical Center

Possibilities
1) Just a 'freckle' - these can happen, just like freckles on the skin
2) Benign lump - it sits there and does nothing, but regular monitoring recommended - every 3-4 months go in and do this check all over again
3) Intraocular Melanoma, Retinal - treatments - total removal of the eye OR plaque radiation therapy where a little packet of radioactive material is attached to the outside of the eye directly over the tumor and left for a few days before removal - two surgeries to do that

IN #3 - side effects -
Well, the first treatment you've lost an eye, so you're half blind and have NO depth perception
In the second, it kills the cancer, but your retina starts deteriorating and in 5-6 years you lose sight in that eye - same effect, just postponed for a while

SOOO - next month (Dec 3rd) I go in and the doc takes more measurements with a more sensitive ultrasound and we go from there - Gods I hope it's #1 or #2

Prayers, good thoughts, whatever - kin I haz dem pleze?

lit candle imagePraying for the first or second result.

However, losing vision is one eye is not nearly as dire as people think. You do not lose all depth perception, for example, as the brain has other ways to determine depth that do not involve binocular vision. It takes time to adjust and retrain your brain, but apparently their is therapy now that speeds up the process, see this article: Learning to Live with One Eye - DukeHealth.org -- so even the worst case probably is not as bad as you might be thinking. But still, praying that you avoid that case.

Dang. Wish I'd read this three years ago. I might be more comfortable driving now. (Right eye, blood clot on the optic nerve.)

It does take adjusting, but having monocular vision isn't the end of the world. Crossing fingers for you that everything turns out well.

You've got what I can spare.

And I understand your issues, too - as I write this, I'm wearing an eye patch because my eyes aren't playing together nicely.  again.  Eye issues SUCK.

So, sympathy, hope, AND far more understanding than either one of us would want.  (and if you do need to block an eye for a while, contact me, I know a lot of semi-blind tricks)

I really hope it's nothing major and you're in my thoughts.
