Using Qi Gong, Yoga or other exercises in ritual?
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:44:32 am »
I've kept my pagan practice seperate to my Qi Gong and martial arts practice, but since a friend asked me to provide a little Qi Gong exercise in a ritual I've started to question that seperation.

While I understand that both practices can exist as seperate 'systems' I also see some merit in including Qi Gong in ritual as a means of achieving a special form of concentration.

Many people do the tree mediation in the opening sequence for grounding which is already a Qi Gong exercise or at least very similar to the Qi Gong exercise called 'standing like a tree'.

For the request from the mentioned friend I chose 'leading the inner fire' (first exercise from the wudang series) which seemed to work well in that particular ritual. I chose that one because it is very simple and helps to focus your own energy very efficiently and also has a slight centering effect.

I wonder if other people have integrated body & mediation exercises in ritual?

Which ones did you choose for which purposes and in which part of the ritual did you use them?

Yoga meditation poses are particularly good. Assuming proper Hero Pose is both easier on the knees and improving concentration. For the same reason I like holding my hands in proper Anjali mudra (palms well pressed together, forearms horizontal at breastbone level) when praying. I'd like to use the throat lock in meditation as well, whenever I manage to hold it long enough.

My yoga practice is not very extensive, but a couple of sun/moon salutations in the morning get me in the right head space for devotions. If I skip practice, I'm more likely to skip prayer too.

Not so much ritualistic, but I use Tai Chi and especially dance as part of my pagan practice and expression.

I do yoga as a devotional act and I could see using it as a part of or warm-up to a ritual. I'm fairly convinced there is magic both to Qi Gong and Yoga and it's a matter of tapping into it and using it, so it seems perfect for ritual.

I consider the entire day a ritual (although I do usually do something more formal on high days). I start each morning with two or three rounds of sun salutations. It wakes me up, helps me with my back pain, and reminds me to focus spiritually throughout the day.

I'd like to incorporate more yoga into my day, or perhaps into a formal ritual as well. I like the idea mentioned above, of sitting in the hero pose. I'll have to experiment to see what else works!
