You mean cryptids? I think they probably exist, just not as flesh-and-blood animals.

one can never tell with out knowing what to look for. i figured id ask on here to see if anyone could indulge my curiosity. i have a fear of megalodons even tho im sure their extinct, or just live really deep in rarely/uncharted depths. iv seen some stuff that has very compelling evidence of well...i know it might sound dumb but of mermaids. iv heard stories of stuff like hell hounds but never seen images or anything that looked like strong evidence.

To my knowledge, it's unlikely megalodon survived to the modern era. I don't think the modern oceanic ecosystem can support them.

thats what i was led to believe but iv heard that only 11% of the total ocean has been explored. the rest is much too deep to study at the moment. the thing that leads me to believe that a few might exist is the chance they could be hiding extremely deep in the ocean. they might have a stable food source but that is hard to really prove since the pressure would kill a normal human in the most advanced sub. tho i fear the unknown, im very curious and am willing to learn more about it.

I saw an interesting documentary a couple of months ago (on Discovery maybe, or a similar channel) positing that a lot of the mythical creatures written about by Classical writers were based on actual fossils of real prehistoric animals whose skeletons had gotten jumbled up together. So, for example, if the bones of three or four different kinds of dinosaurs were found together, and people thought they were all from a single creature, they might have tried to make them fit together and ended up with the idea of a Cyclops or something. The program went through and talked about what kinds of fossils had been discovered where by modern paleontologists, and how they might have contributed to various mythical creatures.

    Interesting idea, anyway...

Personally, having heard the nocturnal calls of animals like barred owls and foxes, I can easily understand how people could think there were monsters or supernatural creatures living in the forests. They're VERY creepy.

you know if you look at an elephants skull, it closely resembles what the ancient people would have mistaken as a cyclops skull.

The island that is associated with the Cyclops was the site for a number of mamoth or mastadon skulls, sorry don't recall exactly which it was. There was a significant fire some years back that revealed a lot of bones were still present beneath the underbrush.

i hear mamoths or mastadons have been found in snow and ice areas. some of which are rumored to be perfectly perserved (not alive tho). not sure if its true or not.

A number of them have been found, a few with undigested plants in their stomachs. A number from Siberia if I recall correctly have been discovered and recovered from the frozen tundra and placed in museums. I think it was National Geographic that had a special some time back about recovering a mamoth adn digging it out of the frozen tundra.
