I've seen it work the other way too. A few weeks ago I paid a taxi for a guy who'd fallen off his bike and hurt himself. A couple days later I was having sushi, and happened to chitchat with a woman sitting nearby about the book I was reading, just for a few minutes. She left before me, and when I got up to pay, she'd left $20 towards my bill (paid the whole thing).
Sometimes those good vibes get returned.

That's the first thing that came to my mind when I read this.
I've read that in some parts of Africa it is believed that some witches are not even aware that they are witches and unwittingly cause suffering to those around them just by simply thinking about them. I suppose it is possible that you could have done something, but I think it's probably just more likely that this fellow is an unpleasant person, and being unpleasant rarely makes one's life easy.
