KickStarter for Tropes vs Women in Video Games
My dad forwarded this to me, and I thought it might interest a few Cauldronites:
Tropes vs. Women in Video Games
A Webseries project in San Francisco, CA by Anita Sarkeesian
Link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...in-video-gamesI really love playing fun and innovative video games but I’m regularly disappointed in the limited ways women are represented. This video project will explore, analyze and deconstruct some of the most common tropes and stereotypes of women in games. This series will focus on reoccurring patterns within the gaming industry rather than singling out just the worst offenders. I’m going to need your help to make it happen!
As a gamer, a pop culture critic and a fan, I’m always working to balance my enjoyment of media while simultaneously being critical of problematic gender representations. With my video web series Feminist Frequency, I look at the way women are portrayed in mass media and the impact they have on our culture and society."I don't go anywhere without my mutated anthrax! Re: KickStarter for Tropes vs Women in Video Games
The creator of this KickStarter is facing some backlash:
Hey, Let’s Make a Video Game So We Can Beat Up a Female Critic of Video Games!
Link: http://jezebel.com/5924069/hey-lets-...of-video-gamesAnita Sarkeesian didn't set out to piss off an army of male gamers when she launched a Kickstarter to raise money for a project that aimed to examine cliched, oversexualized tropes of women in video games. But apparently, daring to say anything bad about video gamers being sexist is enough to amass an entire army of jerks against you, jerks who are determined to video game beat you into submission. And now, one or more of those jerks has taken the time and effort to create a video game that allows players to beat up Anita Sarkeesian. That'll show ladies who think some video game tropes are sexist!"I don't go anywhere without my mutated anthrax! 'Fer duck huntin." - Futurama

"Some backlash" is a huge understatement!
If you have a VERY, VERY strong stomach, I recommend giving this media round up a look: http://www.feministfrequency.com/201...-6967-backers/
The kind of crap she's been getting for even proposing this project is just sickening.

Re: KickStarter for Tropes vs Women in Video Games
Interesting.
Seems that feminists are willing to put their money where the mouth is. This is a good thing rather than creating a political stir over govt funding of such a study, or a stir over many soft science studies that seem to have limited practical payback or use.
Although I'd be curious if there is data on sales to women of games. Has anybody written a game that breaks the tropes and have women bought it? Do women make up a significant amount of the gaming market? and if not, is it just that games are using sexist tropes or is it the genre of games? (ie few women play shooting games but instead focus on Sims or such?)

I hope I didn't sound as though the backlash was trivial; I just didn't think about the sentence too much as I was typing it, to be honest. My mother is on a tear- I'm not being as attentive to my word choices as I ought.
