"Complete Horg Found in Norway"
I was going to post this to news but thought this SIG might find it more interesting:
http://www.fornsidr.no/2012/02/compl...und-in-norway/Archaeologists at Ranheim in South Trøndelag have found a near complete place of worship that was probably in use from the 5th century until it was deliberately covered up with peat around one thousand years ago, probably to prevent its destruction by the Christians.
The horgr consisted of a stone set altar and traces of a wood building that probably housed statues of the gods in the form of logs with the carved faces of Thor, Frey and Odin. Also prominent ancestors were honored in this way. Close by the archaeologists uncovered what they believe to be a processional road.
Unfortunately, the comments seem to indicate that it was destroyed to make way for a housing project.
Hopefully they've moved the artifacts to a museum or something so they can be protected. Someone went to a lot of effort to save that site from being demolished.

Re: "Complete Horg Found in Norway"
Thank you for the post Lokabrenna.
Well, it´s all in the hands of the Directorate of Cultural Heritage now
http://www.fornsidr.no/2012/02/compl...und-in-norway/Unfortunatelyt this holy place will be lost as it will be removed to give space for a developing housing project. But there is an effort underway to have the Directorate of Cultural Heritage protect the site.

Re: "Complete Horg Found in Norway"
I saw this a week ago, got unbelievably excited, and then really depressed when I realized it was now gone... It's nice to know though, that the layout and design of the Horg is pretty similar to what Heathens have reconstructed from different sources. At least it shows we're not completely off the track there...

Re: "Complete Horg Found in Norway"
Seems odd to me that they are ready for international tensions with Canada over a 100some year old Norwegian ship sunk in Canadian waters but willing to let this get destroyed for a housing project. Seems inconsistant to me.
On the plus side I was able to use this kind of thinking to explain to my wife my inconsistancies are due to being 1/4 norwegian...
