The night sky has inspired poets, dreamers, astronomers, and countless others.  We gaze up at those pinpricks of light and imagine.  We look, and we believe so many things about those little pinpricks of light.

But stars are only beautiful because of the space between them.  Were all light, there would be nothing of interest to see.  The vast swathes of darkness create the beauty of the night sky.  The light only beckons because the darkness is so vast and so deep that the small bits of light between seem so important.

Every star is another sun, another glowing ball of fusing hydrogen.  Every star is a flame against the darkness.  The stars are individual, distinct.  Separate.  Held apart by indivisible darkness.  Held together by that darkness into one picture.

We need the fire, the bright, the busy burning and changing stars that create life and inspiration and physical form out of hydrogen and energy.  Without them, there would be nothing but darkness.

We need the darkness as well, to keep the stars apart.  Without the dark there is only a single burning pinprick of existence, with no room for separation or difference.  Without the darkness there is no space for us.
