N. European Tunnel System
Daily Mail
I don't know anything about the credibility of this, but looking at the pictures and thinking of trolls and whatnot creeps me out in a The Hills Have Eyes sort of way.Stone Age man created a massive network of underground tunnels criss-crossing Europe from Scotland to Turkey, a new book on the ancient superhighways has claimed. German archaeologist Dr Heinrich Kusch said evidence of the tunnels has been found under hundreds of Neolithic settlements all over the continent.

Re: N. European Tunnel System
Well, that German dude needs some serious peer review to convince me.
I would go with flint mines or storage/panic rooms before "ancient superhighways"...
On another note; is this relevant to heathenry (not that it has to be, but if you have any thoughts I would like to hear them)?

Haven't found out much so far, but one thing is incorrect: The guy is Austrian, not German.
Here's his website:

Re: N. European Tunnel System
I googled and the only other places it's really talked about are on hollow earth and UFO type sites.

It isn't really relevant to heathenry in a deep way, other than mainly joking about trolls and dwarves.
A few thoughts crossed my mind, though-- the tunnel's possible use for wagon processions and then the tale of that one man (his name escapes me right now) who followed the old woman into the underworld and came out into the fields of the afterlife. Or even the landwights that lived under rocks.
But, that's really, really far-fetched and not something I think is even remotely true.
